Sustainable Livelihood Program

Our Sustainable Livelihoods approach is people centered, inclusive and resilience focused, supporting individuals and communities to build on their existing strengths, knowledge and resources to achieve lasting livelihood outcomes. We promote the development and effective use of human, social, natural, physical and financial assets, while strengthening people’s capacity to respond to economic, environmental and social vulnerabilities.

Our approach recognizes that sustainable livelihoods depend on interconnected opportunities, institutions, policies and community capacities. We therefore promote skills and knowledge development, local innovation, inclusive access to resources, sustainable natural resource use, food security and income generation. Particular attention is given to youth, women, gender, local knowledge and community participation in shaping livelihood strategies. Through partnerships and community led action, we seek to strengthen resilience, expand livelihood opportunities and enable vulnerable households and communities to achieve greater income security, improved wellbeing, reduced vulnerability and sustainable use of natural resources.

The goal of the sustainable agriculture program is to meet the food and textile needs of our communities in the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. PIRWA seeks to integrate three main objectives into our sustainable agriculture work: a healthy environment, economic profitability, and social and economic equity. We ensure that we sensitize farmers on the use of methods which promote soil health, minimize water use, and lower pollution levels on the farm. We do this through setting up demo farms within the communities that can be used to train other farmers on best practices that ensure sustainable supply of agricultural products without compromising the environment.

Through community-based model farms, farmers access practical demonstrations, knowledge and skills on sustainable agricultural practices, enabling them to adopt approaches that increase productivity and income while protecting the environment. Ultimately, PIRWA seeks to build resilient livelihoods, sustainable food systems and empowered communities capable of securing their wellbeing today and for generations to come.
